Re: Why Bohras are so frightened and submissive?
There is a very simple reason for the submissiveness (either conscious or unconscious). There are some basic things we all want in our lives - food, shelter, work, a social life, a spouse and family, and more vaguely an identity. Being a Bohra and complying with norms (and arbitrary rules) allows th...

Books on Bohras
I've noticed that books on the Dawoodi Bohras (except some recent work by Blank) are quite difficult to get a hold of, particularly the Gulzare Daudi of Abdul Hussain - though other recent work (e.g. The Bohras) is almost as difficult. Having finally acquired a copy of GD, how does one determine whe...

Re: Education for Indian Muslims
Very good points raised by Dr. Rashid. His point (h) can also be extended to secular academics. I have met only one "Muslim" faculty in my time in higher education (at least in the US). He was a part-time lecturer in Islamic studies with a conservative bent. In my opinion, the dearth of *r...

Re: A MUST SEE - PART II
Muhammad allowed the Arabs to keep this pagan ritual. Hajj and the rituals involved were definitely one of his major concessions that he knew he had to make for this new religion to survive. If he didn’t allow the stone throwing and all the other stuff to be practiced, Islam probably would not be ar...

Re: The Myth of Intercession
Brother, I agree with you about the ignorance of Muslims(and most people in general). But about the Hindu concept of God – the concept of the all encompassing Brahman can only be seen in the later Vedic texts that try to explain the earlier texts in an esoteric way – and for the most part until only...

Re: want to know details of bohra life
Quite biased, I would add. Jonah Blank was dined abd wined by the Kothar in Mumbai when he wrote the book - "embedded" in Kotahar, if you like!! So if you wish to read about one-sided view of the Bohras, carry one. Alternatively you could supplement it by Dr. Asgar Engineer's "Bohras...

Re: advice on marriage outside the community
A relative went through this process and it was simply centered around taking the Misaq, and the intent or practise of the religion thereafter, seemed to be irrelevant. In fact, the one who took the Misaq has no idea what he took an oath to. Exactly - that’s what happened in my family too - the per...

Re: advice on marriage outside the community
The way I’ve seen most people in my family circle get around this is to make the “non-Bohra” whether he/she is a Christian, Jew, etc. is to just take Misaq … It doesn’t have to mean anything..

WE believe Holy Prophet was PERFECT and there was nothing that he retracted from. His beliefs and teachings were firm and final. No question about that. Anyone who thinks Rasul changed his mind over matters of belief does not belong to us. You can believe what you want, but Muhammad never claimed t...

Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions were able to adjust their beliefs .......n depending on the circumstances. Don't ever say that again, it makes no sense What do you mean it makes no sense? Sometimes when I read these people quoting hadith about what heaven will be like.. it just sounds like little kids retelling the ferry tales their parents told them so they wouldn’t be afraid of the monsters under their bed. So sad, so sad. No wonder Islam is the largest backward religion in the wor...

Uniform Civil Code in India
I was wondering what people thought about having a uniform civil code in India. I think it’s necessary as a first step to quell the resentment towards Muslims. Why should Muslims have different laws than other people in the country.. I think it's absurd. Would like to hear what others think. sh

The reality is that you are a lot more effective and it is a lot easier to change the world when you have all of the above..... ANYBODY GOT A PLAN !! Young people have to get involved. I seriously don’t understand why people continually bicker about obscure facts that do not have any bearing on the real spiritual life of an individual in Islam. Please don’t forget that the core message of the religion that Muhammad brought was the Oneness of God. Bickering about what Caliph did wh...

Teaching children about Islam
How do you think children should be taught Islam? What concepts should be taught to them, and at what age do you think children should start learning about God, etc. ? I think the education of children, and the control over their minds starting at a very young age has a lot to do with why the Bohra ...

Absolutely, and therefore one must not pretend that they have the monopoly of God's sense of good . God fearing Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Jews and non-God fearing atheists have a lot of good in common. Therefore, it comes from the conscience and not from reading instructions in the Holy Book...

However, the associations are made, and the motivation is established. Unfortunately, because no actu...
