Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy was, by the turn of the 20th century, one of India's largest cotton manufacturers and wealthiest men. At one point he employed more than 15,000 workers in his cotton mills and supplied the canvas used for the tents and khaki uniforms of the British soldiers during the Second Boer War. Peerbhoy was also the first Indian Sheriff of Mumbai and was said to be the owner of the largest tannery in Asia. It is thought that he first made his money from shipbuilding.

Peerbhoy became president of the Muslim League for a time, attending its first session in Karachi in December 1907. He was also a noted philanthropist and his charitable works included the construction of the Saifee Trust Hospital in Mumbai.

Peerbhoy financed his son Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy's construction of the Matheran Hill Railway which linked Matheran and Neral.

I tried to find more information about this noble person but failed. Can Saifuddin Bhai and other intelects shed some light about his accomplishments, his life history, his contribution to Dawoodi Bohra jamat and differences with late syedna and last but not least where about of his family?

We need to bring these people in light so that our new generations can not be completely brain washed by Ali Baba and Chalis Chor.

Brief Life Sketch of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Rafiuddin
Adamji Peerbhoy was born in the year 1846 at Dhoraji town in Kathiyawar in India in a very poor Dawoodi Bohra family of Qadir bhai and Sakina Banu Peerbhoy. Adamji was honest, hardworking and above all very optimistic. At the age of 13 he came down to Bombay City with his parents in search of livelihood with just Rs. 5 in his pocket. In those days even Rs. 5 was considerable amount. They took up house on rent of Rupee one per month. Adamji started selling matchboxes on the footpath in the Fort area. During rainy season he took shelter in the devdi (business office) of one Lukmanji Seth. Since Adamji could not afford the rent and at the same time he did not want to utilize that place without paying he made an offer that Lukmanji provide him material and he would paint his house free. Lukmanji gave him work of painting his house. While staying in that place Adamji learnt reading and writing bit of Gujarati language and some calculation. One Englishman, Lt. Smith was a friend of Lumanji and whenever in India he frequently used to visit him. He saw the painting work of Adamji and like it. Lt. Smith gave him work of his bungalow.

The graph of his life took an upward turn when he came in contact with Lt. Smith. Smith helped him for big government contracts of paintings, manufacturing military tents and boots. In just two years Adamji earned Rs. 5 lakhs and a name in the market. At the age of 20 he had his own bungalow ‘Peerbhoy Palace’ at Malabar Hill area (now known as Saifee Mahal), double horse driven Baggies, costly furniture and several servants.
He had earned all these by his own hard work and foresight. He established several factories manufacturing thousands of tents and shoes for British soldiers. God had also given him a tender heart with a tough head. He concentrated on the welfare work both for his own community and for general public. The amount he had spent in 18th Century must be multiplied several times to get the figure at today’s rate as in those days Rs. 5/- or Rs. 10 used to be the monthly income for an average decent family.

1) He distributed under his own supervision food grains worth Rs. 4 lakh in 1877 among the draught affected people of Kathiwar.
2) He was illiterate but he established 27 schools and he used to spend Rs. 12000 to 13000 annually to run these schools.
3) He built Rabat (rest houses) at Kabala, Mecca and Madina and he used to spend annually Rs. 13000 to provide free food and the facilities to the Bohra pilgrims.
4) He built a huge sanatorium along with a mosque at the Charni Road Bombay in 1885 at the cost of Rs. 3.5 lakhs. This sanatorium served as a rest house for sick persons, pilgrims for several years. He also used to run a school for Bohra orphans and a dispensary for immediate medical help here.
5) Thousands of people were affected by a devastating fire in 1886 at Burhanpur. He spent Rs. 60,000 on the relief work.
6) In 1885 he started an orphanage in Kathiawar for the Bohras on which he used to spend Rs. 30,000 to 35,000 annually.
7) There was an acute draught situation in Yemen and he donated 2000 pound sterling for the relief of the affected Bohras.
8) There was again a draught in Gujarat in the year 1897 and he sent relief material worth Rs. 1 lakh.
9) He also built a hospital for medical treatment of the children spending Rs. 4 lakhs.
10) He donated Rs. 5 lakh to establish Prince of Wells Science Institute at Alighar University.
11) Development of Matheran in Bombay and running a mini train there was his one achievement.

It is important to note here that he made all these expenses from his own hard-earned money and never collected a single paisa from the community. Sir Adamji Peerbhoy’s honesty, integrity and hard work were highly valued by the government officers.

In recognition of his splendid social welfare work he awarded:
1. Title of Justice of Peace (J.P.)
2. He was made first Sheriff of Bombay in 1897.
3. 49th Dai, Sayedna Mohammed Burhanuddin conferred title of `Rafiuddin’ on him.
4. In 1900 he was hounored by the title of `Qaisare-Hind.
5. In 1907 he was made a knight and given the title of `Sir’ by the British Government.
6. Though an illiterate, Sir Adamji was honoured by Mohammedan Educational Conference to be its first president.
He died on 11th August 1913. The Times of India on his death wrote in a front-page editorial on 13th August 1913:
“His wealth was made entirely by his own energy and persevering enterprise. He started life next to none. But as he accumulated the earnest of a hard life he showed in a marked degree that trait, which is fortunately characteristic of the modern Indian Capitalist, of generosity in devoting a portion of it to the amelioration of the lot of his fellow men … Moslems will remember him for his benefactions to their communal interests and all India is indebted to him for the splendid contribution which he made for the prosecution of scientific study at Aligarh. Government marked publicly their sense of his worth when they recommended him for Knighthood and now that he is gone we may think of him as a faithful citizen whose example it behooves his successors to emulate.”

It must be noted that Sir Adamji Peerbhoy who was born in 1846 and died in 1913 had seen the period of 4 Dais. [47th Dai Sayedna Abdul Qadar Najmuddin (1840 to 1885 - 45 years), 48th Dai Sayedna Abdul Husain Husamuddin (1885 to 1891- 6 years), 49th Dai, Sayedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (1891 to 1906-14 years) and 50th Dai Sayedna Abdullah Badruddin (1906 to 1915 – 7 years)]

It must be further noted that though Sir Adamji had love and respect for the Dai and Dawat but he did not tolerate any unjustified interference even by any Dai. He brought 47th Dai Sayedna Abdul Qadar Najmuddin from Surat to lay down the foundation stone of the Sanatorium building at Charni Road Bombay. When Sayedna was leaving he presented him a huge some of Rs. 50,000 as gift. 47th Dai died and the Sanatorium was completed during 48th Dai Sayedna Abdul Husain Husamuddin. Sir Adamji brought Sayedna Hushamuddin from Surat to perform the inaugural ceremony. After inauguration Sayedna Hushamuddin expressed the desire to stay in the newly built sanatorium for few days and Sir Adamji allowed him. One day Sayedna Hushamuddin told Adamji “I need Rs. 3 lakhs immediately.” Sir Adamji asked him “Do you know how big that amount is?” Sayedna Hushamuddin said “You gave lakhs of rupees to Najmuddin without questioning why you are arguing with me. I need that money so give me otherwise you will see what can do to you.” Sir Adamji could not tolerate this arrogant behavior of religious head and he asked him to get out immediately. Sayedna Hushamuddin Saheb left the sanatorium but was surprised that no Bohra in Bombay allowed him to enter in his house once he was expelled by Sir Adamji.

The period of Sayedna Abdeali Saifuddin (1825 to 1836) which lasted for just 11 years was the most glorious period of the Indian Dawoodi Bohra. But the position of Dai became very weak after the mysterious death of 46th Sayedna Badruddin (1836 to1840- 4 years), due to the controversy of Nass. During 49th Dai, Sayedna Burhanddin’s time, the Gadi was heavily in debt, which caused the Dawat considerable embarrassment. The financial troubles aggravated and the Dai had to borrow money from two Hindu Banias and from his own Amil, Saikh Abdul Tayeb. They filed suits in the court of the first class judge at Surat. Shaikh Abdul Tyeb claimed Rs. 56680 including interest. After much embarrassment the suit was settled by a consent decree. The defendant (Dai) was ordered to pay Rs. 54,000 by installments spread over some 12 years with interest. The next step in the suit was an astounding one, because the Amil actually tried to put the Dai into prison for no-payment of the debt.

Sir Adamji, who was then in his 40s, was watching all these developments in the community with great pain. Local Dawoodi Bohra Jamats were quite independent then. They used to collect funds locally and spend locally. Nothing was regularly sent to the center (Dai’s office). Sir Adamji had consolidated his position in the community as well in public by his philanthropic activities by now. It is to Sir Adamji’s credit that in front of the Dai the Bohras used to call him ‘Bavasab’ (father figure) and general public used to know the Sayedna as Peer of Peerbhoy.

Looking to the pathetic financial condition of the Dawoodi Bohra Dais in 1899 he organised a first all Bohra Conference at Dhoraji. A booklet was published in Gujarati and distributed to all the Bohra Jamats, which on the title cover specified the Dastur-al-Amal (constitution) of Dawat, Sudhara na kaidawo, Mumeeno maate, Sayedna va Maulana Mohammed Burhanuddin saheb (sallamhullaho- ta’ala) na hukam thee, Namdar Sakhidatar Sheth Adamji Peerbhoy Rafiuddin (sallamhullaho- ta’ala) taraf thee.
The Conference was organised with a view to abolish certain undesirable customs, to simplify the procedure for akika, marriage etc. But the main object was to put restrictions on the powers enjoyed by the local functionaries in those days. In this Dastur-al-Amal it was also made obligatory for Amils to remit part of their collection to the center (as said above earlier the entire amount was then retained by the Amil and the local Jamat). But this process which was started by Sir Adamji in a good faith and for the love of Dai and Dawat was misused by Sayedna Taher Saifuddin for monopolizing all powers in the hands of Dai, completely throttling the freedom of his followers.

Sir Adamji Peerbhoy died two years before Sayedna Taher Saifuddin succeeded as Dai in 1915. The over ambitious and scheming Sayedna Taher Saifuddin right from beginning had started amassing wealth by hook or crook and built his own financial empire. Sir Adamji’s sons were well educated and emulated their father in public and charitable activities. Therefore Sayedna Taher Saifuddin did not take very kindly to Sir Adamji's’sons activities as Sir Adamji’s and his son’s philanthropic activities far exceeded his. With Chandabhoy Galla case the Sayena considered them as his rivals and tried to defame and alienate Sir Adamji Peerbhoy’s name. First he caught hold of ‘Peerbhoy Palace’ at Malabar Hills Bombay and converted it into Saifee Mahal, then Bohra Rabats at Karbala, Mecca and Medina, then Matheran and now Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium, built “Saifee Hospital” on Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trst’s land.

Inspite of all these efforts by 51st and 52nd Sayednas, Sir Adamji Peerbhoy will always remain a greatest philanthropist and most illustrious well-wisher of the Dawoodi Bohra Community.

MAA Bozell, a joint venture between the MAA Group and Bozell Worldwide, is part of True North Communications, the world's sixth largest marketing communications group. Bozell owns 30% of MAA Bozell and some of its senior officers are on the board of the Indian company.

MAA Bozell was started in 1960 by the late Ayaz Peerbhoy as Marketing & Advertising Associates. Ayaz Peerbhoy, one of the doyens of Indian advertising, was well known for his business acumen as well as his creativity. His business intuition made him foresee the need for a truly Indian agency at a time when Indian products and services began coming of age. Originally based in Mumbai, MAA moved its Corporate Headquarters to Bangalore in 1981 after Ayaz Peerbhoy's death.

Bunty Peerbhoy, Ayaz's son, took over the company and the next few years witnessed rapid growth and diversification into a range of related marketing communication activities like Public Relations, Direct Marketing, etc., which made MAA the pioneer in Integrated Communications in India.

More than 40 years old, the company is ranked 10th among top 100 agencies listed in the A & M Agency Report. It employs about 150 people and all key posts are filled by professionals who have in depth experience in tackling brand issues and problems.

The Head Office at Bangalore is located in an impressive four floor building designed around an atrium with a rooftop garden and an internal waterfall. It functions as an independent entity, its main role being to provide support to all the other offices.

MAA Bozell is unique in that it believes in media neutral communications: advertising is not the default recommendation. Will it not be appropriate for you to know more about burhanudin saab's mother, where is her grave, how she spent the last days of her life after her husband remarried and what the son does on her death anniversary rather then knowing of someone whom you hate from the deepest corner of your heart ?

Dear Jayanti, Only Allah is All-Knower and Aimighty. Not even a Prophet, Imam or Dai. They are all mortal beings. Since I am a part of the reform movement I try to know the truth visa-vis Kothar's propaganda.

The members of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy family whom I know personally:-
That Allah has ruined the sons of Adamji Peerbhoy as they dared to oppose 51st Dai, Sayedna Taher Saifuddin, this propaganda is false and mischievous and to mislead the community. How can Allah who is merciful and compassionate and who has sent Qur’an with the sole purpose of radical restructuring the existing society free of injustices, exploitation and oppression, ever be against those persons who have fought against the oppressive and unjust policies of Sayedna Taher Saifuddin?
I can say this because I have personally met many members of the Peerbhoy family. I have found them quite rich, wealth-wise and property-wise even today.
I have seen their various bungalows and business establishments in India in places like Dhoraji, Matheran, Neral, Breach Candy, Gamdevi, Lohar Chawl and Churchgate. I have also met few members in Canada and USA. I have not gone to Pakistan where some of the Peerbhoy family members live in Karachi and Haiderabad.

Some of them are known as “Peerbhoy”, “Bootwalas” and “Merchant”.

I had also had the privilege of meeting Sir Adamji’s last surviving son, Mohammad Peerbhoy. He had come from Karachi and was staying with Adamji P. Peerbhoy, charter accountant at Forjett Street in Bombay.
And last two surviving daughters Rehmat bai Jani, wife of Jafar bhai Jani and Fatima bai Hathiari. They both used to stay in ‘Shanta Niketan” at Gamdevi, Bombay. Rehmat bai Jani’s son Mansoor Jani fought the famous “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Case” along with Advocate Abid Merchant for more then 30 years with their own expenses which was more than a crore and half rupees, against powerful Sayedna’s establishment which wanted to demolish it and construct a commercial complex on its land. The entire credit for the huge commercial hospital that we see today in the name of “Saifee Hospital” and retaining Sir Adamji's sanatorium and his grave in the compound of the sanatorium goes to these two well-wishers of the community and humanity.
Rehmat bai Jani owns Sir Adamji’s Charlotte Bungalow at Matheran, a huge hardware shop in the name of “Jivaji Esaji Hardware Mart” in Lohar Chawl Bombay and various other properties in Neral, Kalina, Kurla.

Her daughter Mehfooza is running a charitable institute at Worli Bombay in the name of “Baap noo Ghar” and Mehfooza Bahen’s husband Saifuddin Haideri owns a Aluminum Factory and they stay in the posh area of Breach Candy at Bombay.

Akhtar P. Peerbhoy has a charter accountant firm at Marine lines Bombay and he runs a scholarship trust for college students in the name of “Chhaberia Caritable Trust" besides managing “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Rafiuddin Yatimkhana” at Dharol.
Mustafa P. Peerbhoy owns a big store in the fort area in Bombay in the name of “Munnu’s Jeens”.

Husain Abdul Husain Peerbhoy owns two hotels, Green Hill and Wayfare at Matheran besides running a school in Neral in the name of “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy English School”.
Likewise Ishaq Haveliwala family (Owners of “Orient Apparels” at Churchgate Bombay), Zarina Hathiari, Lukmanji Bootwala family (London, Canada), Akber Abdul Husain Peerbhoy (owner of Khatija lodge at Matheran), Arif P. Peerbhoy (Owner of a charter accountant firm), Adamji Peerbhoy (Babu bhai), Hatim Merchant family (Owns a legal firm), Mohammad Ali Merchant (Lawyer), Gulam Husain Bootwala family etc are various other members of the Sir’s family which I have known personally.

Since the members of the Peerbhoy family have remained quite well-off since beginning there was no reason for any one of them to go back to Sayedna’s fold.

The family members in Bombay have their own Graveyard known as “Peerbhoy Kabrastan" adjacent to Bohra Naryalwadi Kabrastan.

salamun alaikum,

From your post it is clear that the descendents of AP were never put in any financial crisis. This is totally against to what Kothar has been saying about them. This month of ramzaan also the amil at our place criticised the AP's son's and their ill fate after his dealth. I am sure many have heard this.

Its a pity that kothar is telling a white lie. Isn't it not a grave sin on their part.

Was the Peerbhoy Palace given to Syedna voluntarily or taken by him through coercion?

The story that I got from the family sources and from the issues of Age-Kadam magazine is as follows:-

Taher Saifuddin and Ebrahim Adamji Peerbhoy were of the same age and close friends. Adamji Peerbhoy was born in the controversial period of 47th Dai, Sayedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin on 13th August 1845 (10th Shaban 1261). Sir Adamji had witnessed the regimes of four Bohra Dais, 47th Dai, 48th Dai, 49th Dai and 50th Dai. He never went into the controversy of Nass and remained faithful to all of them. Not only that, he kept on helping these Dais financially as they were poor and indebted. Sir Adamji was a man of principles. He was ever-helping but was against exploitation. The 48th Dai who had negotiated the seat of Dawat with his brother Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was brought from Surat to Bombay by Sir Adamji, inaugurated Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium in 1886. He stayed in the sanatorium for few days thereafter and Sir Adamji took good care of him. But then Husamuddin Saheb started misusing his position as Dai, Sir Adamji threw him out of the Sanatorium instantly.
Several Dais prior to Taher Saifuddin stayed in Surat and whenever they came to Bombay they stayed in Sir Adamji’s “Peerbhoy Palace”. I have photographs of Sir Adamji’s sons spending jolly good time with young Taher Saifuddin in Peerbhoy Palace.

The Chandabhoy Galla case in 1917 was fought by Ebrahim Adamji Peerbhoy supported by more then 15,000 elite Bohras. As the case proceeded, many supporting Bohras deserted him one by one under pressure by Taher Saifuddin. The Chandabhoy case, longest case in the Dawoodi Bohra history proved disastrous for Peerbhoy family. But it proved most beneficial for Sayedna’s family. By declaring sons of Sir Adamji as enemies of Dawat, Taher Saifuddin incited the Bohras and collected huge funds in the name of defeating the enemies of Dawat. Sayedna also learnt the art of manipulating religion to his advantage and strengthening his grip over the community.

Ibrahimji Adamji Peerbhoy after his victory in Chandabhoy Galla Case took up the cause of spreading modern secular education in the community and became instrumental in establishing first ever English medium Hakimiya High School in Burhanpur with the help of Master Hasanali Chakera, Hasanali Gulzar, Mohammadali Bolbol, Khan Bahadur Fakhruddin Motabhai, Mohammadbhai Mulla Abdulhussain, Khan Saheb Habibullah Vakil and Imranali Vakil and in organising an Educational Conference along with Hafiz Khanbhai Mulla Abdulali, Seth A.M.Jiwanjee, Shaikh Faizullahbhai Hamdani, Seth Mohammadali Mamuji etc. He also was instrumental in helping the Bohra victims of Hindu-Muslim riots in Bhopal. Inspite of Taher Saifuddin’s Fateh Mubeen Ebrahim Peerbhoy was becoming more and more popular in the community, which was unbearable for Taher Saifuddin.

The vindictive Taher Saifuddin was not ready to forgive the family of Adamji who had challenged his authority. He had decided to ruin them. It is said that there was a rotten fish in Sir Adamji’s family, his grandson, Akbar Peerbhoy who was greedy, over-ambitious, cunning and scheming. He was bought over by Taher Saifuddin after two years after the death of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy. Initially sons of Sir Adamji jointly took over all their father’s welfare activities in full vigour after his death. But the notorious Akbar Peerbhoy who was planted in the Peerbhoy family by Taher Saifuddin under instructions of his master could gradually poison the minds of family members against each other, especially the sons of Sir Adamji. He told the other brothers that Ebrahim Peerbhoy was ruining the family by overspending in court cases and other welfare and educational activities of Bohras who are ungrateful. He also poisoned their minds and advised them to safeguard their interest in Sir’s business and properties.
The constant backbiting by Akbar Peerbhoy against Ebrahim Adamji made Ebrahimji’s life difficult in Peerbhoy Palace so he shifted to a room in Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium.
There were other factors too. Because of excessive inherited wealth and super political patronage some of the members of Sir Adamji had become arrogant and intolerant.
In 1931 Ebrahimji declared himself as insolvent and requested the Bombay High Court to prepare a scheme to run the Sanatorium by a trust. Akbar informed Syedna who immediately intervened and argued in the Court that he is Dai-ul-Mutlaq of Bohras and hence the masjid attached with the Sanatorium should remain under him. Thus late Syedna obtained the permission to appoint his Amil and arrange namaz in Sanatorium masjid. There after when late Syedna consolidated his power he socially boycotted the trustees of Sanatorium and replaced them by members of Syedna’s family.
Sensing this danger the members of Peerbhoy family decided to auction the “Peerbhoy Palace”. News reached to Syedna through Akber. Late Syedna immediately sent some Gujarati Hindus and one Parsi as his agents who bought Peerbhoy resident and later handed over to Taher Saifuddin.
I do not know how far it is true as it based on oral evidences. Looks like the records have been destroyed. I had not brought this to public notice as I can not substantiate it by documentary proofs.
